Presidents Bio Bill Cunningham was an economist on the staff of the AFL-CIO Public Policy Department for 25 years until his retirement in September 1999. He wrote articles, prepared testimony and did public speaking on economic growth, productivity, profits, worker incomes, and international trade and competitiveness as well as on energy and the environment.
In his last three years at the AFL-CIO, Bill coordinated the Alliance to Protect Electricity Consumers, an organization set up to ensure that public interests are protected in electric restructuring legislation. Bill also chaired the Committee on Economic Growth and Productivity at the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Climate policy became one of Bill’s responsibilities in 1996. He represented the AFL-CIO at the United Nations climate change negotiations at a number of sessions, including the negotiations of the Kyoto Protocol in December 1997. In Bonn, Bill addressed the UN delegates on behalf of the labor organizations present.
Bill received a BA from Wayne State University and a Masters Degree in Economics from George Washington University. Bill lives in Silver Spring, Maryland and his three children attended Maryland Public Schools.
